We hijabicans have had it tough for many years. We are torn by those women who claim hijab is not required in Islam…
24:31 And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and to be mindful of their chastity, and not to display their charms [in public] beyond what may [decently] be apparent thereof; hence, let them draw their head-coverings over their bosoms. And let them not display [more of] their charms to any but their husbands, or their fathers, or their husbands’ fathers, or their sons, or their husbands’ Sons, or their brothers, or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their womenfolk, or those whom they rightfully possess, or such male attendants as are beyond all sexual desire, or children that are as yet unaware of women’s nakedness; and let them not swing their legs [in walking] so as to draw attention to their hidden charms And [always], O you believers – all of you – turn unto God in repentance, so that you might attain to a happy state!
and by those women who bash you for wearing anything other than niqaab, black abaya, and black shoes. The bottom line is, hijab is for women ALL over the world and was not meant to reflect only 1 cultural heritage. We were created into nations and tribes…to all look the same? I don’t think so.
49:13 (Asad) O men! Behold, We have created you all out of a male and a female, and have made you into nations and tribes, so that you might come to know one another. Verily, the noblest of you in the sight of God is the one who is most deeply conscious of Him. Behold, God is all-knowing, all-aware. –
There is nothing wrong with having an identity other than an Arab, Pakistani, or Moroccan one. We CAN have an identity as American Muslim women as long as we follow the general guidelines of hijab.
Clothing was sent to us as a cover and beautification. Allah tells us this. The problem is, do we listen?
7:26 O CHILDREN of Adam! Indeed, We have bestowed upon you from on high [the knowledge of making] garments to cover your nakedness, and as a thing of beauty: but the garment of God-consciousness is the best of all. Herein lies a message from God, so that man” might take it to heart.
My dear sisters, the only way we can begin to improve our situation, and the world as a whole is by first educating ourselves. Don’t let anyone spoon feed you your deen. Seek knowledge. Find the answers to those questions that plague you. Always seek the truth. Then, inspire others.
